Item Description
5.5x8.5" unlined sheet of "USO" stationery is dated Sept. 21, 1943 and features handwritten letter from Melvin Purvis (1903-1960) to his wife. Purvis was an American law enforcement official and FBI agent, noted for leading the manhunts that captured bank robbers such as Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd. He resigned from the FBI in 1935 and later married Marie Rosanne Willcox, having three sons. Purvis served in the US Army as an intelligence officer during World War II, reaching the rank of colonel. He assisted w/compiling evidence against Nazi leaders in the Nuremberg trials. Heartfelt letter notes how much Purvis misses and loves his wife and young son, urging her to write him (despite his early asking her not to). Letter goes on to ask that she take some photos and send him as well as to take photos of their second child when he was born. Letter has been signed "I Shall Love You Forever. I Adore You. Melvin." Folded as issued, letter has some lt. edge wear and aging from envelope. Letter is VF overall and comes w/partial envelope that has been hand-addressed in Purvis's hand. Army postmark at left along w/aged strip of tape. Good overall and just comes along. Comes w/JSA LOA.
