Item Description
28x41" one sheet poster 1930s-1940s. Attractive Murry Korman photograph of Sothern at center. Born Hazel, she was raised in vaudeville beginning in her uncle's show as just a toddler. At the age of 13, Hazel's mother and uncle both succumbed to tuberculosis and she was left without a guardian. She thought fast to provide for herself. Hazel became Georgia Sothern (a clerical error that stuck) and she went to work as a burlesque dancer w/forged papers to present herself as 17. She was reportedly expert at her craft w/decades of red hot reviews and the creativity to keep working through Mayor LaGuardia's crack down on caberet licenses leading up to WWII. Referenced here is her work in "Star And Garter" w/Gypsy Rose Lee and her "Night On Broadway Revue" being here run under James E. Strates Midway Shows. Soiling and fold lines, VG. Fred Hoffman Collection.
