Item Description
Base is 15x18". 33" tall. Papier-mache. Cloth components adhered for Kennedy's suit. Produced for the 1960 Democratic National Convention held in Los Angeles, CA. Meant to be affixed to a sturdy pole and waved by Kennedy supporters on the floor. Two examples were made for use at the convention. This is the only surviving example, as the other was destroyed during the excitement and celebration after Kennedy's nomination. Accompanying the head is a copy of Life Magazine issued on July 26, 1960, in which the head is pictured on the cover as well as in the interior of the issue. Also included is a book titled Meet John Kennedy, authored by Nancy Bean White published in 1965 by Random House. Image of head being hoisted at the convention is pictured on pg. 60. Some scattered surface loss on face on right side, most notably on chin, jaw line and ear. Some loss on the cloth for his suit. Otherwise moderate handling. An incredible survivor, and a unique and significant piece of political history. Due to fragility of item, packing and shipping must be done by a third party. Please contact us w/any shipping rate questions prior to the close of the auction. Can also be picked up in person if so desired. John Hillhouse Collection.
