Item Description
1.25" with 1896 or possibly 1897 W&H back paper listing their three button patent dates below the name and address: Chicago Ilustrado Pub. Co. 97 Clark St. Chicago Ill.  We've not found any information on this company. The button has no text as at the time these three men would have been widely recognized as Cuban independence fighters. At left is Cuban-Dominican Generalissimo Maximo Gomez famous for attacking Spaniards and sympathizers with his scorched-earth policy. At center is Jose Marti, known as the Apostle of Cuban Independence who died May 19, 1895. At right is Antonio Maceo known as The Bronze Titan (for surviving battle wounds) who was second in command of the Cuban Army of Independence and who died Dec. 7, 1896. Exc. A just discovered example of a previously unknown button. Rare.
