Item Description
With nearly 90 years of stories, Superman continues to thrill, cementing his place as a pop culture icon. Even today, we still get a thrill reading and watching the Man of Steel's heroic exploits. One of DC Comics' biggest properties, he is continually featured in various comic book titles, live action and animated movies and TV shows, not to mention his impressive merchandise presence.

Now take yourself back to the Summer of 1939. Superman had debuted a year before in the pages of Action Comics #1,  when superheroes were still a fresh concept and the public could not get enough. This "strange visitor from another planet" quickly became an instant sensation, with the character effectively taking over the Action Comics title, necessitating a second, eponymous title of his own. Bill Byers Collection.

Enter the Superman comic title. Featuring stories written and illustrated by his co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the stories "Clark Kent Gets A Job" and "The Coming Of Superman" (which was originally untitled) were first printed in Action Comics #1. The version printed in this issue replaces the original's first page with two new pages, more completely detailing Superman's interplanetary origin and adding four new pages chronicling Clark Kent's arrival at the Daily Star newspaper (precursor to the Daily Planet).

As for CGC notes, this includes "Back Cover Missing. Front Cover Detached. Incomplete." This issue's back cover featured a Superman pin-up by Joe Shuster and is frequently found missing as many readers removed cover for display purposes. Brittle pages.

Surprisingly, despite the historic significance of this Golden Age comic, there are only a total of 77 Universal Grade copies that have been graded by CGC, according to the current CGC Census. Of those 77 copies, two other CGC 0.5 copies (each also missing their back covers) have sold recently, one for $96,000 (Jan. 2022) and the other for $130,000 (Sept. 2022) as noted by GPA Analysis.

This clearly well-loved book played an important role in establishing the legacy of comic book superheroes, and likely also played a pivotal role in a young collector's life upon its publication. We are proud to offer this unrestored, original state copy of this historic comic to collectors today, continuing the saga of this important book.
