Item Description
Debuting January 23, 1985, Rankin/Bass Productions' animated TV series ThunderCats introduced audiences to an interstellar species of feline-like aliens who search out a new planet - Third Earth - only to come up against the evil of Mumm-Ra and the Mutants of Plun-Darr. Continuing a popular trend of the 1980s, the ThunderCats toyline by LJN was released in conjunction with the cartoon series.

Both the cartoon and its accompanying toyline are regarded as some of the best to come out of the 1980s, with legions of devoted collectors eagerly searching for high grade examples and rare figures from the line.

One such rare figure is offered here. Blister card contains 7" tall LJN/Rainbow Toys action figure w/Thunderwings vehicle/accessory. This was the European release of this figure. It differs from the American release of Thunderwings Lion-O in that this figure comes w/Battle-Matic Action, Sword of Omens and "Secret Power Ring" that causes figure's eyes to light up. The American release Thunderwings Lion-O was a totally different figure from the LJN Lion-O in that it lacked both the "Light-Up Eyes" and "Battle-Matic Action" features, resulting in the figure having solid eyes and back, as the Power Ring contact point was no longer necessary. The Battle-Matic button on the back of the figure was also removed as LJN realized having it in place made it difficult for the figure to use the Thunderwings. For this reason, the figure is referred to as the "Solid Back Lion-O" by collectors. One of just two "Deluxe" figures (the other was Luna Lasher Mumm-Ra) to be packaged encased in a clear plastic bubble surrounded by the backing card, as the combined size of the figure and the vehicle necessitated this style of packaging. Archival case. AFA subgrades are as follows - C80 B85 F85.

There were five different varieties of Thunderwings Lion-O produced - LJN, Rainbow Toys, Childbro, Glasslite and Cosmocats - and of those varieties, only seven examples have been graded by AFA. This is also the only AFA-graded example of this LJN/Rainbow Toys European release. Offered here is the single highest graded example among all varieties. Among the rarest ThunderCats toys and a must for any serious collector. Mark Warner (UK) Collection.
