Item Description
Issued in 1913 as a baseball-themed playing card game, this 54 card series w/rounded corners measuring 2.5x3.5" includes a total of 43 identified baseball players along with 9 baseball action photos whereby the ballplayers depicted are not identified. In addition, two header cards were included w/each set. Card fronts present a black and white player photo along w/a pair of baseball play scenarios used to play the card game. Backs of cards portray a red and white ornate design along with the 1913 patent date used to identify the year of release. All of the major stars of the day were included, making this a highly desirable yet relatively affordable release during a time frame in which not very many baseball card sets were produced. Highlighting the series are a young "Shoeless Joe" along with Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie, Christy Mathewson and Cy Young. "Shoeless Joe" began his MLB career w/ten scant games playing for the Philadelphia Athletics during 1908-09. Joe would move on to Cleveland in 1910, where he would quickly establish himself as one of the American League's brightest young stars and leading batters. Joining the Chicago White Sox during the 1915 season, Jackson would best be remembered for his banishment from professional baseball following the 1920 season by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for his perceived involvement with the Black Sox scandal during the 1919 World Series vs. the Cincinnati Reds. Nonetheless, Shoeless Joe maintains to this day the third highest career batting average in MLB history at .356. The PSA pop report indicates that this is one of only 17 examples at this grade level w/only 39 graded higher. Don't pass up this opportunity to add a high-grade example of Shoeless Joe Jackson from an early point of his illustrious career.
