Item Description
Each 7/8". Apparently created and designed by W&H's in-house artists as a royalty-free way to combine the public infatuation with Cox's Brownies and the fad of the just invented celluloid covered  1896  pin-back button. Pinkies fame (there were mid-west local baseball teams calling themselves Little Pinkies- and they played games with teams named the Yellow Kid) spread quickly across the country when W&H introduced them c. Fall 1896 (set includes a reference to two 1896 presidential candidates- Bryan-Boy Orator and McKinley-The Colonel). So, W&H not only retailed (via their catalog mostly featuring buttons sold as set) sets of Pinkies to the sudden legion of button collectors, they also hit it big when American Pepsin Gum decided Pinkies were a marvelous, fad driven, but cheap give-away. The set offered here has one button with a W&H back paper and 19 have American Pepsin Gum name above the W&H patent info. There were and are here 20 characters- with the version of The Ball Player the one with a period after Player. The no period version is not included - but not all that hard to find if desired. The Colonel and The Drum Major have tone on darker side and the The News Boy has light age. 17 of 20 are VF to NM. Scarce as a set.
