Item Description
The first Superman contest was announced in Superman #3 w/a solicitation for club members and the statement contest details would be explained in the Jan. 1940 issue of Action Comics. 2,000 prizes were offered to boys and girls who in - 100 words or less - wrote the best letters on the subject "What I Would Do If I Had The Powers Of Superman." Only members of the Supermen Of America Club were allowed to participate and all entries had to be received by Jan. 28, 1940. Only two of the prizes were actually Superman related  w/the rest being generic toys such as a football, boxing gloves, Chinese checkers and about a dozen others. Superman-related items included a sweatshirt w/Superman emblem and Superman ring (see following lot) showing him breaking a chain across his chest surrounded by "Supermen Of America - Member" text. Offered here is 7.25x10-3/8" typed letter on club letterhead that mentions enclosed $2 check as winnings for "8th Prize Winners In Superman's Super Contest." Letter bears inkstamp signature of Clark Kent and letter has been folded as mailed w/additional vertical fold at center. Letter is evenly aged and shows handling wear. VG/Fine. Rare and first we've offered of this letter in our 57 years. Danny Fuchs Collection.
