Item Description
Box lid lists the maker as "Universal Toy & Novelty Mfg. Co. New York No. 810."Page 7 of Munsey’s Disneyana shows a full page ad from Universal Weekly, although the box lid is a different version than what we are offering here. The item consists of the box, instruction sheet and contents. The box is 6.5x8.5x.75” deep. Lid has some lt. pencil writing on it which includes a single word describing the action by each Oswald image and on the lower third of the box lightly written is “’Oswald’ The Lucky Rabbit Of The Movies Stencil Set See Oswald In Universal Pictures.” This in essence is a repeat of the bold red type at the center of the box lid. Just below the word “Stencil” on the box lid is a 1” horizontal st. break in the cardboard w/just a couple tiny tear marks showing around the “U” of “Universal.” Box also has trivial traces of dust soiling on the outer edges but all in all, extremely sturdy, Fine condition. Next is the instruction sheet and we believe this is the first example we’ve seen included in a set we have offered. The six stencils are pictured and titled on the instruction sheet, each beginning w/word “Oswald” and then followed by these titles: “Painting The Town, The Jazz Singer, The Sheik, Playing Bandit, Marathon Runner, The Athlete.” Instruction sheet has only the tiniest edge wear and is Exc. Each stencil is 4.5x5.5”.Stencils are on six different colored sheets of stiff thin cardboard. Oswald the Athlete has had the loose pieces all punched out and Oswald Painting the Town has had only his feet area punched out. The four other stencils are complete w/all punchout pieces intact. Sets we’ve seen typically come w/six blank pieces of paper and in this set there are three blank green pieces of paper. Stencils overall are NM. Box lid lists the maker as “Universal Toy & Novelty Mfg. Co. New York No. 810.” Historic and rare.
