Item Description
Pair of 7.25”x10” square bound publications relating to printing and graphic related material. Presented here are V3 #2, “Narrative Illustration” and V2 #3, “Good Triumphs Over Evil.” First volume contains first printed version of “Narrative Illustration, The Story of the Comics” by M.C. Gaines. Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide notes this publication in a pamphlet version with a plain cover with title only and is considered very rare. While this bound publication version is not noted in the Overstreet Price Guide, our research has turned up that final page of the pamphlet version contains the following text, “Reprinted From Print, A Quarterly Journal Of The Graphic Arts V3, #2 Summer, 1942.” Based on these findings, we are proud to offer the first printing of M.C. Gaines publication “Narrative Illustration” as it was first seen in the art community. Gaines mentions early comic book forms and their origins, as well as notable artists like Honore Daumeir, Winsor McCay, Rodolphe Topffer and others. Some of the contents include: promotional comic book “The Minute Man Answers The Call” which was included in the Jr. Justice League Society Club Kit Premium available from DC Comics. Also included is 8 page insert comic “Picture Stories From The Bible #8 Jonah and the Whale.” Second volume includes 7 page article “Good Triumphs Over Evil” by M.C. Gaines. Contents also include several 1940’s comic book photos including photo of 4-color press in action, sample of script from Wonder Women #7, and various stages of comic art in production. Text explains the process of producing and manufacturing comic books. This publication features the original printing of the story before it was printed in pamphlet format. A wonderful and historically significant follow-up to the other volume in this pair. Both issues circa 1942. Issues have some corner tip wear and wear to spine with pinch crease. Pages have the slightest aging at extreme margins and are otherwise bright and clean. Pages are Exc. Covers have handling wear and are FN/VF.
