Item Description
5.75”x8.5” book by Fredric Wertham from 1954. This is the first version of the book with dust jacket and without bibliographical note which comic publishers forced to be removed. Arguably the most infamous tome about comic books, this book almost stopped the comic book industry with the author’s dissertation on how comic books were directly linked to juvenile delinquency and the degradation of the morals among young people. Some of the book points state that “Are An Invitation To Illiteracy, Create An Atmosphere Of Cruelty And Deceit, Stimulate Unwholesome Fantasies, Suggests Criminal Or Sexually Abnormal Ideas, Create A Readiness For Temptation, Suggest Forms Of Delinquent Impulse May Take And Supply Details Of Technique” among many others. Several comic books of the time were cited along with illustration from “Phantom Lady” #17 and “Reform School Girl.” Book is complete with dust jacket, which has some color rubs and aging as well as corner tip wear. Dust jacket is FN. Interior pages have some handling but are still Exc. Hard cover has some minor corner bumps but is Exc. A very historically significant publication in comic book history.
