Item Description
.75" w/enameled top featuring dates, pennant, crossed bats, pair of baseballs and "Balt." Back of stud has incised "Sterling." The O's won their first NL pennant in 1894 and repeated this feat the following two years, 1895 and 1896. After losing the Temple Cup in 1894 and 1895, they finally got the job done in 1896 defeating the Cleveland Spiders sweeping the series in four games. The Temple Cup was awarded to the winner of an annual best-of-seven postseason championship series for American professional baseball from 1894 to 1897. This was the first form of a championship series in professional baseball since the 1892 World Series, which saw the first and second-half winners of the National League face off in a best-of-eleven playoff. Tiny scattered trace of luster wear, enamel surface has lt. trace of wear and a few tiny nicks. All of this is only seen upon very close inspection and/or magnification. Surface remains clean and glossy. VF. An incredibly rare pre-1900s baseball artifact that surely saw very limited distribution. The only such example of this version we know of. A must have for baseball historians and diehard Orioles collectors.
