Item Description
Decades of collecting resulted in 55 buttons, some previously unlisted in Hake's Button In Sets, issued by newspapers carrying these strips plus another 18 single character issues also from the 1930s. The first 53 are 1.25" or 1" and vast majority have back paper explaining a match of the number on the button to a number printed in the comic pages will result in "Valuable Cash Prizes." In order: Buffalo Evening News, 9 of 9 known. Includes a Buck Rogers aviator. All Exc. to NM. Next Detroit Times, all 5 of 5 known. Curl nick on Tillie, rest Exc. to NM. Next The Detroit Times (1.25") Buttons in Sets named 7 in either 1" size, 1.25" size or both. This group includes new discovery of Pa Perkins in 1.25" as well as first seen of Barney Google and Jiggs in 1.25". Jiggs, Pa and Skippy are Exc. while four have age, VG/Fine. Next are rare Johnstown Tribune. Of three known, Moon Mullins is here and Exc. Orphan Annie and Reg'lar Fellers are not here. Two previously unknown are The Bungle Family and Bringing Up Father, both damaged with stain and cracks. Good. Next is Los Angeles Evening Express. Six were known, all here, plus unknown Mr. Bungle. Four craze lines on Pam, rest Exc. to NM. Next Milwaukee Sentinel, 6 known, 6 here , tiny age on Nebbs, rest Exc. to NM. Last is Newark Star-Eagle. These are in two sizes and small size comes with newspaper name in red or black. Of the 21 possible,18 are here missing only 1.25" Minute Movies, and both 1" versions of S'Matter Pop. All Exc. to NM. Last are 18 singles. Sizes are 1.5" or smaller. Majority VF with small wear on early and scarce Flash Gordon, small age on rare Kansas City Reg'lar Fellers and Baltimore litho, two tabs are rare but damaged and one stem gone, stain on Sunny Jim, stain on rare Mutt & Jeff (c. 1920s), two the same Popeye rare are lithos but w/tanning and the three cello in bottom row are all Exc. and rare.
