Item Description
Two complete litho button sets issued in cereal boxes. The insignia set of 36 is 13/16". 18 were issued in 1943 with 18 more in 1945. The plane set is larger 1-1/8" size. Four green planes were released in 1943 following in 1945 w/four brown planes which come both in a photographic style as well as an illustration style against hand drawn cloud backgrounds. Both sets were created by legendary "Premium King" Sam Gold. Gordon Gold, who joined his father just after WWII, related the FDA required inks and a glossy coating lower in hardness but less toxic in case kids chewed the buttons. The inks used were very susceptible to chipping and the gloss finish was a magnet for dust. As such, most examples today are Good to Fine. Both sets have scattered lt. trace of wear and aging but are much nicer than typically found. Glossy w/strong color. Some Fine but overall mostly VF to Exc. Both are among the best condition sets we have offered or seen in our 58 years. John Grossman Collection.
