Item Description
At 1-5/16", this is the third largest of the few Cass medals produced. The dies are credited to C.C. Wright, New York and the medal is a mate to Taylor 1848-12. Each side has a rim edge standing well above the bkg. surfaces. On the front is an exceptionally high relief bust of Cass below his name while on the reverse is the motto "The Constitution And The Freedom Of The Seas." Each side has a tiny bit of tan tarnish along the extreme outer edges next to the raised rim but for the most part both surfaces are highly reflective with a near proof-like finish. This finish indicates a re-strike from c. 1860 but still exceedingly rare and Cass is one of the most difficult candidates as there is only one relatively common brass token and even that is difficult to find in decent condition.
