Item Description
Larger than the typical ferrotype at 1-1/8" (30mm), this piece is from the series of frames which are rounded rather than flat and thus their 'doughnut' nickname. Each side of the silvered brass frame has embossed circle of rose flowers with 3 leaves in between. The Lincoln portrait is a little dark but extremely strong and clear although at the very upper edge there was the tiniest bit of emulsion chipping above and not removing any of the lettering of his last name. Apparently to stop further damage, an extremely small thin layer of transparent glue was added. While the surface glossiness shows in certain light angles, the entire area is only 1/8" deep by .25" long at the most. The rest of the ferrotype surface is of exceptionally high quality and actually approaches perfection. The Hamlin ferro is equally perfect with a mirror-like gloss. The piece is complete with what seems to be an original brass ring on its upper edge. Also of note, this is what DeWitt designates as Lincoln portrait #3 which in our experience is less frequently seen than the version of this piece with portrait #1. While the tiny damage area is unfortunate, it shows very little and everything else about the piece is superior.
