1.25" with covered tin back and vertical pin by St. Louis Button Co. He was a wealthy South Carolina planter and personally financed the Hampton Legion, a force of infantry, cavalry and artillery. He fought at First Manassas and participated in Antietam and Gettysburg as a cavalry commander. After the war, he was elected governor of South Carolina twice and also served as a U.S. Senator.
