Item Description
2.5x8" striking gold on red with group initials across the top. Following our independence from Britain in 1790, Treasury Secretary Hamilton convinced Congress to authorize ten small schooners to patrol the waters of the East coast insuring that in-bound cargos were off-loaded only at approved ports of entry. The organization's original name was the United States Revenue-Marine. They were our sole naval force from 1790-1794 and the U.S. Coast Guard is their direct descendent. The group also served in the Civil War with revenue cutters stationed at major ports from Portland, Maine to Galveston, Texas and from Port Washington to San Francisco. The final 3 letters of the initials at the ribbon top likely stand for Mutual Benefit Association. Rare and N. Mint.
