Item Description
5.5x22" pen and ink on artist's thin cardstock sheet signed by the Boston Globe's great cartoonist Wallace Goldsmith, undated but used during TR's 1912 Bull Moose campaign. Trivial margin tanning and a few pinholes on upper margin above artist-penciled title of "Mr. Asa Spades Is Elected." First panel Asa, whose text cartoon balloons are in black dialect throughout, says "Howdy Cunnl? Yo Sho Is Havin A Gran Fight!" The stick figure of TR and Rough Rider's hat replies in two panels: "I Haven't Begun To Fight Yet Asa, But As My History Has Been Brought Up To Date I Shall Disappear From My Usual Place In The Globe--And You Have Been Elected To Fill The Space I Leave Vacant." This extra public scrutiny and the increased "Accidens'" that will befall him each week causes Asa to rush to buy life insurance. After he is rejected, he implores "Misto An Missus Globe Readah" for suggestions about "stunts" that might come his way in the future. VF and unique.
