Item Description
23.25x29.25" frame contains an original watercolor painting by famed comic book illustrator Alex Ross. Art has been double-matted to a size of 12x18.5" and depicts Ross's aged Superman from the acclaimed 1996 mini-series "Kingdom Come" that Ross created with Mark Waid. Superman was at the center of that story, which pitted youth against experience and sought to describe what defines a hero as DC Comic's flagship characters - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and others - fought against a new, caustic generation of heroes and villains in a battle to determine the future of the planet. The feeling of despair is effectively captured in this piece, with a brooding Superman and a new, darker "S" shield on his chest. This piece was used as the cover for comic book publication "Overstreet's FAN" #14 in August 1996 to promote the mini-series. Ross had previously painted two covers for "The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide" number 27 and would later go on to paint three more covers for "The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide". This being the only piece he created specifically for Overstreet's monthly magazine. Ross has signed his name in the lower right-hand corner. Ross's handwritten notes concerning the cover design are included on a seperate sheet of paper, attached to back of the frame. An absolutely stunning piece by one of the most well-known and popular comic book artists today. Mint as framed. This is the first time this art has been offered for sale. "Nothing did I enjoy more in the series than drawing Superman," Ross said at the time, even touting the influence of painter Norman Rockwell on the covers of the individual issues.
