Item Description
The first Disney Studio card was issued in 1930 and we know of only one existing example. The 1931 and 1932 cards are exceedingly rare and offered in this auction as items 1424 and 1426. What this lot consists of is a complete run of 52 cards from the years 1933-1984. Cards are in various shapes and sizes but all feature superb art and graphics. The cards for 1935, 1938 and 1939 are in multi-page booklet form. 1937 is a two-part card. There is an insert sheet (the first we've seen) we believe issued with the 1942 war years card that features Disney and war-related headlines plus the text "Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year! Walt & Roy - What The Hell - Come On Over To Victor's This Afternoon And Have A Drink On Us!" Also included are 15 original mailing envelopes from different eras. A common theme for these cards was to promote a current or upcoming Disney film so a vast array of characters are featured. There are many scarce and rare cards throughout this run not limited to the early issues, even some later year cards are difficult to come by. Only two cards show notable wear. These are 1943 which is Fine and 1944 which is VG. All others have just the slightest traces of wear/aging. The earlier years grade VF to Exc. while as the cards progress condition becomes Exc./N. Mint. Aside from the 1943 and 1944 cards there are no defects of note. It took the consignor over 20 years to assemble this collection with much emphasis on condition, upgrading cards over the years. This is a very rare opportunity to not only obtain all of these cards at once but also in high grade. This lot coupled with items 1424 and 1426 would instantly give you the ultimate Studio Christmas card collection. Additional photos are available online.
