Item Description
10.25x17" illustration board contains cut-out pieces of paper with pen and ink original art by Dr. Seuss of some of his most famous characters for use on a 1970 Aladdin thermos. Depicted here are The Grinch from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," A Star-Belly Sneetch, The Cat In The Hat, Yertle The Turtle, Horton The Elephant from "Horton Hears A Who!" as well as an un-named character that was not used on lunchbox or thermos. Acetate "The World Of Dr. Seuss" title paste-ons at top center. Each character, with exception of Horton and un-named character, has been cut from other sources and arranged in a collage with additional heart accents. While Seuss art does come on the market from time to time (and selling for upwards of $10,000 to $20,000 for original Cat In The Hat art), most of Seuss's book art is in the posession of the University Of San Diego. Most art that comes on the market are specialty pieces, not actual production artwork like the one we are offering. Piece came to consignor from Aladdin employee. Nearly all of Aladdin's lunch boxes had art by staff artists, this lunch box had its art done by Dr. Seuss himself, though unsigned. Comes with original 7.75x13" photostat showing bw art featured on band of lunch box. Has handling wear and staple holes in upper left-hand corner. Fine. .75" tear at Horton's ear, below acetate paste-ons. Art is aged and o/w Exc. With this artwork, we are including a well-worn example of the finished lunch box and thermos to note differences in art and finished product. Differences include, Grinch and Cat In The Hat have been cropped below waist and Cat In The Hat's tail has been omitted on thermos. Previously mentioned un-named character is completely omitted and characters have had some minor repositioning. Lunch box just comes along. A rare opportunity to get a grouping of so many of Seuss's fantastic and famous characters in one place.
