Auction 194 - Part I
Item numbers 1 though 880 in auction 194
Item Description
1-1/16" listed as Sullivan/DeWitt LC1848-5. Obverse has his full name with 3 stars to left and right of the "1848" date all surrounding his portrait. On the reverse, a female figure representing Liberty is seated on clouds with a nude child seated at her right holding aloft a framing torch, globe of world and with rays in the bkg. Below partially readable is the slogan "United We Stand, Divided We Fall." A very difficult piece to find in condition exceeding just Good. On this piece, the reverse does have some smoothing of the figures' heads and about one-third of the letters are not visible even with a glass but overall the gilt finish remains quite nice and we would grade the reverse VG while the obverse is very strong and clear grading Fine. The only example we recall seeing in gilt brass. Rare.
