Item Description
15/16" ferrotype with narrow brass rim depicts and reads "Maj. Anderson/Our Flag's Protector." A brass loop goes through tiny hole on top rim edge that removed the letter "S." The blank tin reverse has a small dot of solder that appears to have once held a pin no longer there. Ferrotype's surface has an extremely slight raised bump at the center but all details are extremely clear with a near perfect ferrotype surface. Major Robert Anderson was commander at Fort Sumpter and after its fall the Fort's flag became a popular patriotic symbol upon his return with it to the North. At the conclusion of the war, after Sherman forced the Confederates to evacuate Charleston, the Federal government took possession of Fort Sumpter on Feb. 22, 1865 with a gala flag-raising ceremony. The flag is currently displayed in the Fort's museum. Exc. and Rare. We've seen only 2 or 3 in 40 years. See Ex-Prisoners of War, Jeff Davis, Gen. Lee and G.A.R. items #601-605.
