Auction 194 - Part I
Item numbers 1 though 880 in auction 194
Item Description
7/8" tall high relief and extremely detailed jugate made of moonstone, a gem noted for its translucent and somewhat opalescent qualities. Several of these are depicted in both Hake and Sullivan/DeWitt. This piece is listed but not pictured in Sullivan/DeWitt as 1888-56 as a lapel stud. However, the stud on the back of this example is gone and instead a crude but small spot of solder holds a loop joining a second loop to suspend the piece from a brass shell eagle pin. Obverse displays Mint and this is the first example we've had in 40 years where the moonstone is backed by brass but not surrounded by any other enamel on metal accents. Reverse of the piece carries the maker's name "Fowler Bros. M'f'rs. Prov. R.I."
