Item Description
The Sub-Mariner was one of Timely Comic’s best characters. He had a vast and rich underground heritage. One of the by products of this heritage was the creation of this issue’s cover girl, Namora. She was Namor’s cousin. When, in the absence of Prince Namor, Atlantis was, she swore vengeance upon the murderers and joined Namor in his battles. She even changed her name to reflect her new mission in life. Namora means “Avenging Daughter” in Atlantean. Timely must have had a lot of faith in her because right about the time this issue came out, they gave Namora her own book. However, none of those covers are close to the power of this one. Cover artist Don Rico has created a stunning picture. Surrounded by a solid yellow background, Namora sits front and center taking notes as Price Namor battles some criminals on the dock behind her. The yellow background makes it impossible for even the casual looker to not notice her blue suit. Her image is so large and centered that it is a wonder anyone has ever looked past her to actually see Namor taking out four hoods with one round-house blow. Her larger than life appearance on this cover was a guaranteed eye-catcher. As large as the title of the book is, she even dwarfs that. Your eyes are automatically drawn to her powerful image. Whether it was an action packed cover like Captain America #1 or this relatively simple image, Timely sure knew how to sell books. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF 8.0. According to the CGC census, this copy is tied with one other as the highest graded copy they have seen.
