Item Description
For three little ducks heading to school, Huey, Dewey and Louie sure look happy. In addition, they seem to be pretty confident that the teacher is going to love their gift. The simplicity of this tender gag is enhanced by its appearance on an all-white background. The pencils for the cover were done by famed duck artist Tony Strobl and than it was painted by Donald T. MacLaughlin. This allowed the image to acquire a sense of depth. Every story in this 100-page Giant features the nephews interacting with a member of the Duck Universe. This includes Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, Gyro Gearloose, Gladstone Gander, The Beagle Boys, Daisy Duck, Grandma Duck, and Gus Goose. In one outstanding story Huey, Dewey and Louie interact with Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear. The book rounds out its 100 pages with puzzles and games, all of which involve the three ducks. Most of the stories are penciled by Tony Strobl. He started at Western Publishing in 1949 and became one of their best known duck artists. Strobl continued to draw the ducks as well as other Disney characters until the late sixties. The back cover to this book is known to have different versions. This one features Donald and Daisy in a two panel school crossing gag. Due to their incredible size, Dell Giants seldom are found in as high grades as this copy. One of their features is the fact that the spine is square bound. This binding will often show folds or stress lines when read. This book is CGC-certified NM+ 9.6 and it has a perfect spine. In addition, it is black, so, it would easily show the slightest bend or tear. This incredible looking spine is by no means the best looking part of this copy. The cover retains such a high gloss that it still shines through the protective casing that CGC placed it in. According to the CGC Census, this is tied with two others as the highest graded copy they have ever seen.
