Item Description
For a total of 128 pages, the absolute best of All-American Publishing is showcased. The cover features Green Lantern, The Flash, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Wildcat, The Atom, The Whip, The Ghost Patrol, Little Boy Blue, Hop Harrigan, Johnny Thunder, Sargon the Sorcerer and Mutt and Jeff. With the exception of Sargon, everyone on the cover has a story inside. The cover was created by several artists; among them, Joe Kubert, (doing his first work on Hawkman), Sheldon Mayer and E. E. Hibbard. The cost of the book was a quarter, which for the time was a tremendous amount of money for a comic. It sure packed a lot of value into that quarter. Although published by All-American Comics, many collectors consider this the first DC Giant. The cover has become so iconic that DC used the same concept for a tribute to the fallen of September 11. In that instance, the billboard was filled with Firemen, Policemen and other heroes of the day with Superman standing in front of it looking up in admiration and awe. In 1945, a year after this issue saw publication; Gaines sold his shares of All-American to DC and went off to form EC Comics. In some way, this book could be seen as the encapsulation of all he had achieved with that Company. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified VF 8.0. The cat at the very bottom, underneath Hawkman’s legs, is Cicero from Mutt and Jeff.
