Item Description
As the Golden Age wound down, publishers struggled to adapt to the public’s expectations. Crime and romance began to take over from Superheroes. While DC had the two most popular comics on the planet, Superman and Batman, they took no chances when they introduced this mystery title. The book features the first appearance of King Faraday, who was an international spy about ten years before he should have been. Some of his adventures, which first appeared in this title, were actually reprinted a little over ten years later in two Silver Age issues of Showcase (#50, 51), during the height of the sixties spy craze. The feel of the book could almost be described as “Comic Noir”. The cover, done by Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella, certainly contributes to that shadowy feel. Infantino, Giella and Alex Toth all contribute interior art. As nice as the art looks, the stories were lighter in tone than Film Noir actually was. This is attributable to the work of some of the best writers to ever work in comics, Robert Kanigher and Ed Herron. The book does contain other stories besides King Faraday, but despite the high quality of the writing, none of the characters ever moved into anything bigger. The title itself only lasted four issues, but it is very fondly remembered by mystery and adventure lovers. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF+ 8.5. The CGC Census lists this copy as tied with one other for the second highest graded copy they have seen.
