Item Description
This large and impressive tin litho windup by the Louis Marx & Co. is © 1939 by McCarthy Inc. 4.5x16.5x6.5" deep nicely illustrated box contains 16" long vehicle. Front and back panels of box feature great scene of bustling city street in which Charlie and Mortimer drive by in their car. The top and bottom side panels feature two panels w/portraits of Charlie and Mortimer, each w/quote from them regarding this toy. Text includes Charlie saying "When We Were Buying This Car, I Intended To Be The Driver, But Snerd Says To Me Let's Git One O'Them Double-Controls" and Mortimer text includes "I Kin Only Drive So Far Till That Feller McCarthy Shifts Her Th' Other Way." While box is complete, one end flap has been torn loose and attached to this flap is 1x6" side panel piece, all other flaps have been reattached or reinforced on interior w/brown paper tape. Box has additional wear including some long crease lines, mostly on one of the portrait panels. All color remains strong, despite defects, still displays about VG. Body of car has great design featuring different geometric patterns including wavy lines on fenders, straight lines on hood and checkerboard pattern on trunk. Sticking out of the roof are separate tin heads of Charlie and Mortimer. Each door bears their names as well as the title "Private Car" while top of windshield frame reads "Sunshine Top." Car is designed w/pair of protruding bumpers, each complete w/rubber bumper guard. Toy works and travels forward until the front bumper strikes an object and this causes the vehicle to reverse its direction, this time until the rear bumper is struck. All the while the heads spin. Both heads have pinpoint scattered paint nicks. Car has just some tiny scattered paint nicks and scratches but overall appearance remains extremely glossy w/deep rich color. Overall still an Exc. example of this large and attractive windup. Provenance of Philip Samuels collection.
