Item Description
1966 mono third state peeled "Butcher" cover LP. Original cover for this album (issued only in the United States and Canada) featured a garish scene captured by photographer Robert Whitaker that perfectly captured The Beatles' black humor, showing them posed in butchers' smocks with cuts of meat and beheaded baby dolls. Album was issued, but suffered almost immediate recall and had more familiar "Trunk" cover paste-overs applied. Many of these paste-overs have been removed and such is the case with this example. Album has RIAA #6 seal indicating west coast distribution. Strips of clear tape were applied to cover to help facilitate the lifting of top layer and to reveal "Butcher" cover. Paste-over "Trunk" cover displays Fine. "Butcher" cover shows remnants of paste-over at margins but displays VF. Rest of album has 1.5" split and 3" split on side which has glue repair, not affecting spine writing. Scattered staining on back cover. VG/Fine. All original, comes with Capitol advertising insert and VF copy of record, which shows light wear. Also included is photocopy of original Capitol Records Distributing Corp. letter announcing recall of "Butcher" cover. A Beatles must and 1 of the most controversial album covers of its day.
