An activist for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, Brown was named chairman of the "Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee" in 1967. That year he was arrested in Cambridge, MD and charged with inciting to riot as a result of a fiery speech he gave there. He left the SNCC and joined the Black Panthers in 1968. He appeared on the FBI's ten most wanted list after avoiding trial on inciting a riot and of carrying a gun across state lines. He disappeared for 18 months, then was arrested after a reported shoot-out with officers. Convicted of attempted robbery in 1971, he spent 5 years in the Attica prison and converted to Islam.
