Item Description
6.75x10.5". ©1915. Book consists of 52 reprints from "Carey Cartoon Service" weekly issued window display cartoons. The weekly issued cartoons were offered through subscription to store owners to display in their store windows. 1914-15 issues feature subjects leading up to and including the first World War. Extensive detail of each features repeat characters of Uncle Sam/John Bull/President Wilson as well as Bryan/The Kaiser/International Leaders. Many characters depict countries including: U.S./England/Turkey/Belgium/France/Austria/etc. Announcement page explains that "It Originated With The Carey Fountain Pen Stores And Has Been Used By Them For About Eight Years." In reference to the great war, the text explains "When The European War Began, The Subject Did Not Appear Very Promising For Cartoons Intended For Window Display Owing To The Bitter Partisan Feelings The War Engendered In The Breasts Of Many Whose Ancestors Came From One Or Other Of The Belligerant Nations. Moreover, The President Made A Strong Appeal To All Citizens To Refrain From Unneutral Words Or Deeds. In Keeping With The Spirit Of The Proclamation And Out Of Difference To The Feelings Of Many Citizens, Absolute Neutrality Has Been Sought And Maintained In The Carey War Cartoons." Light surface dust/wear to cover. Cloth binding remains sturdy. Cover VG. Scattered margin stain to contents, o/w contents VF.
