Item Description
10.25" tall silver-plated trophy with laurel etched band around rim of cup. Mark on underside of base reads "The Essex Silverplate Co. - E9393." Essex Silverplate Co. was part of Wallingford Co. of Wallingford, CT (1903-1941) that is now the Wallace Silver Co. Etched inscription reads "Carl Laemmle Jr's 'Collegians' Trophy Awarded By Universal Pictures To" with no name included. Laemmle was the son of Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures and it was his insistance that paved the way for horror films being produced at Universal, resulting in several classic Universal Monsters. Laemmle Jr. served as producer on Dracula, Frankenstein, Murders In The Rue Morgue, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Bride Of Frankenstein as well as the acclaimed musical Showboat. Laemmle also produced 1930's Academy Award-winning best picture "All Quiet On The Western Front." As Laemmle was in charge of Universal's total film production from 1929 until Universal was sold and the Laemmles were ousted in 1936, affectively dating this trophy 1929-1936. A few small dings to base and light wear where cup meets base as well as some scattered light pitting to handles. Trophy has o/w been professionally restored and replated for an Exc. display.
