Item Description
Nine 9.5x12" sheets of animation paper with images generally measuring 5x5.5" and done in lead pencil with a few additional colored pencil accents. Drawing numbers include 175, 211, 259, 270, 287, 319, 327, 343 and 390. Sequence features Mickey as Uncle Tom reaching for string of firecrackers, picking them up, lighting match to light firecracker in his mouth, about to light firecracker, firecracker's fuse lit, resulting explosion, loud cloud of smoke, smoke clears to reveal Mickey's face is black (in this case, green colored pencil was used) and scene with Mickey in blackface (lead pencil) saying "Mammy!" From 1933 Mickey Mouse cartoon. Obviously, cartoon is considered politically incorrect today. Historic and important sequence. Pages have light handling and aging but sheets remain clean and art is Exc.
