Lot of 191 different 11.5x16.5" with typically 8-10 pages. Published weekly, lot comprised of issues published between Aug. 25, 1892 and Aug. 24, 1893. Newspaper-style publication was a popular children's magazine that began in 1827 and ran to 1929 before merging with "American Boy" publication. Initially centered around religion, publication eventually became more entertainment driven. During the 1890s, publication reached its peak with a circulation of nearly half a million, having the largest circulation of any publication in the United States, not counting mail order catalogues. Magazine went on to feature pieces by writers of critical acclaim such as Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Jack London. Mostly prose with scattered well-done bw lithographed illustrations and numerous ads of the era. Issues are folded once horizontally as issued and the majority have been stitched together with string by original owner. Others have some splits to spines with interior pages having moderate wear along right-hand margin. Overall, most issues are VG. Call for more details.
