Item Description
End of prohibition bar figure (see lot #30) c. 1933. Base is 3.25x5x1.75" deep. Figure is 12" tall and total height is 19". Underside marked twice "Made In Germany" with wooden cover over compartment for two "D" batteries. Wood cover has couple faint words and company logo of canary on perch above three mountain peaks plus the letter "K." Wiring appears ok and top of glass-paneled lamppost opens on a hinge but we couldn't get small light bulb to light. The whistling aspect works perfectly. A provided key winds figure in back with brass lever to activate. Man continually swivels his head to his right as interior brass mechanism and bellows produces a whistling tune. We've seen an example with the tune "How Dry I Am" but for this example we cannot name the tune, although portions have a "Yankee Doodle" resemblance. Some darkening of color from years of sitting, mostly on upper surfaces of jacket and neck scarf. His cane is original but about .25" snapped off. A couple trivial scuffs on the wooden base. Great detailing, down to toes showing through one shoe. Scarce and Fine. See lapel stud in prohibition lot #447.
