Auction #196 - Part II
Item numbers 976 though 2670 in auction 196
Item Description
Four-piece outfit ©1942 KFS. Separate 12.5" tall hood and 32.5" long one-piece body suit are both purple cotton with white trim and drawstrings. 6x7" oilcloth wrist cuffs and 7.5x25.5" oilcloth belt are both black leatherette-covered fabric. At center of belt is "Phantom" name with the Phantom's skull and crossbones symbol. Copyright appears on the belt at lower right-hand corner of the center design. Wrist cuffs show scattered moderate wear, one with about 90% of the black covering intact, the other 95%. Good. Belt shows overall obvious wear including scattered wear to the bw surface covering. This includes an area 1x3" long on the left side of the skull. Some areas where the black color is missing have been touched up with black marker. Belt attached via two metal snaps at each of the 4 corners. These have been pulled loose and have been re-attached about an inch or so away from the original areas. One has complete top and bottom snaps, the other is only the bottom portion missing the snap closure part. Good. Hood shows light trace of aging with small scattered light brown stains on the white piping. Fine. 3x5" triangular piece of fabric at crotch appears to be a replacement, darker purple fabric neatly sewn in place. 1" fabric split at seam of right shoulder, several scattered tiny fabric pulls and a few tiny 1/16" holes. Chest shows areas of moisture staining but this blends with fabric and only appears as a slightly darker shade of purple and is only noticeable when viewed closely. A few minor scattered brown stains, most noticeable on the knee with single .25" dark brown stain spot at top of leg. Despite defects, fabric still has a fairly bright appearance and is VG. Rare. Consignor bought this very costume from us in 2000 and is now re-consigning. Realized 2000 auction price = $1,000.
