Item Description
Hardcover is 5.25x7.25" and contains 12 issues Vol. 1 #1-12 from Nov. 1933 to Oct. 1934. This specially bound set is from the estate of Gunther R. Lessing. Lessing was one of the most colorful and controversial Disney figures. He headed Disney's legal department for many years before the Disney brothers promoted him to Vice President and General Counsel of Walt Disney Productions. At the Disney Studio, known for its laid back atmosphere where everyone was addressed by their first name, it was Lessing who Walt referred to when he said "The Only Mister We Have At The Studio Is Our Lawyer, Mr. Lessing." Lessing retired in 1964 almost exactly 35 years after he joined the Disney brothers family business. Lessing died at age 80 on Sept. 28, 1965, less than three months before Walt's death. In gold text on front cover is "Mickey Mouse Magazine Vol. I/Gunther R. Lessing" along w/small image of Mickey. The magazines have slight trim from their original size for binding purposes but the integrity of the issues is not impacted, just an occasional trimming of a bkg. or border. The binding is professional w/gold leaf on edges of pages. Blank pages have been added to inside front and back covers before and after the first and last issues. These magazines were issued by various dairies and various dairies are represented within these 12 issues. Each issue features 16 pages and includes specialty ad on back covers. Special themes/features of note include #2 Christmas issue, #4 Boy Scout issue, #5 Girl Scout issue, #9 "Meet Babe Ruth" article, #10 World's Fair article. The issues exhibit just trace of margin aging but as neatly bound remain totally bright and clean copies. There is a binding gap between pages 2 and 3 of the first issue and between the last issue's back cover and blank page but all remains firmly intact and structurally sound. Issues as bound remain Exc. Hardcover has scattered small trace of wear and aging, mostly along edges. Fine. A truly unique item of Disneyana.
