Item Description
This 3" button dated for "2/23/80" is the souvenir from the "Nashua Telegraph Presidential Forum" originally meant to be a one-on-one debate between Reagan and Bush.  Republican candidates Bob Dole, Howard Baker and John Anderson protested and filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission charging the newspaper was making an illegal donation to Bush and Reagan.  Reagan then agreed to foot the bill for the debate.  The afternoon of the debate, Reagan decided he wanted to invite the others to join him and Bush.  The newspaper editor John Breen said it was too late for the change.  That night editor Breen came onto the stage followed by Bush.  Then to everyone's shock, Reagan came out followed closely by Dole, Baker, Anderson and Phil Crane.  When Reagan tried to explain, Breen attempted to cut him off demanding the sound technicians "Turn Mr. Reagan's Microphone Off."  Reagan then grabbed the microphone stand, angrily stood up and shouted "I'm Paying For This Microphone Mr. Green (sic)."  Reagan claimed it was only fair to let everyone participate but Bush, insisted the newspaper's rules should apply and eventually the other candidates were forced off the stage.  The next day Reagan grabbed more than double Bush's votes and the other four were left far behind.  Along with this historic jugate, comes a 1.25" issued by Kansas outfitting store with slogan "I'm High On Reagan/Bush/1980:  Mountain High, Inc."  Both essentially Mint.
