Item Description
This 1.25" sepia reads "Our Friend And Organizer/H.A.P.U." Collector Phil Shimkin lead our research on this item and discovered a group with the initials H.A.U. standing for Hebrew Actors Union, founded in 1899 in NYC which fits the geographical origin and age of this button, although not indicated as such on the button itself. We could not determine if the group was ever called Hebrew Actors & Playwrights Union (H.A.P.U.) but playwrights were members of the group. The H.A.U. was founded by Joseph Barondess, a turn-of-the-century Jewish labor leader and the illustration of him found on the internet bears a strong resemblance to the man's photo on this button. Type the name into Google Images and draw your own conclusions. Top edge of the button has couple barely visible tan dots which is in the development of the photographic paper. Reverse of the button is an open back with fixed horizontal bar pin. Button displays glossy and Exc. and is the only example we know of.
