Item Description
1.25" and we believe in bronze. Missing the ribbon and bar pin but still with the metal segment that secured the medal to the base of the ribbon. This is a very early example. The history of this medal as well as the ship's name it bears can be researched on the internet. Front reads "United States Navy" and shows ship "Constitution." Reverse rim "Fidelity-Zeal-Obedience" with hand-engraved center inscription "C.S.C./No. 3508./John Ford/U.S.S. Ajax/Mar. 6th 1886." The initials "C.S.C." stand for Continuous Service Certificate. In 1884 new rigid guidelines were introduced for the awarding of this medal and captains were required to grade sailors in specific categories with resulting points entered on their C.S.C. Exc. condition with nice patina on the reverse.
