Item Description
3x5-1/8" off-white stiff card has been boldly signed with flourishes by Sullivan "Compliments Of John L. Sullivan - Jan. 28th, 1898." Tiny rounding of bottom left corner tip. Most trivial and o/w Mint. Comes with 4x6.25" "Happy Holidays" card from the 1940s used by Edward P.F. Eagan, the chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission. Before serving as Commissioner, Eagan was famous as the first person to win gold medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics (boxing-1920; bobsled - 1932). Card has a small caption "Only Genuine Portrait - Currier & Ives, 1883" beneath the top title "John L. Sullivan - Heavyweight Champion Of The World 1882-1892." Three card margins have moderate tanning about .25" into card plus one .5" corner crease. Card would still mat to Exc. illustration in a framed display with the outstanding 1898 autographed card. Sullivan was the first American sports hero to obtain national celebrity status, the first American athlete to earn over one million dollars and was the last heavyweight champion of the bare-knuckle era under London Prize Ring rules. Comes with Hake's COA.
