Auction #197 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 991 in auction 197
Item Description
1-7/16" (35mm) embossed brass with small hole on top rim as issued. Shown as DeWitt/Sullivan 1872-2. Grant is depicted in civilian dress against a stippled bkg. The reverse of the piece is a mirror image of the front. There are traces of silvering but more on the reverse than remaining on the front. DeWitt's comment on the item is "This piece, first made for this campaign, was used repeatedly in various forms of badges by Republican organizations for twenty years." This piece was originally in the Ben Fauver Collection and when it was sold by Joe Levine several years back, he noted in spite of this (DeWitt's) statement, this is the first auction appearance of this token. We concur in that assessment of its rarity. It is also the second largest medallic item of the 1872 Grant campaign. N. Mint although most of the silver flashing has disappeared. Rare.
