Auction #197 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 991 in auction 197
Item Description
This button is listed as Hake #3124 although our note says our illustration was a 4" button with a cardboard reverse. This example is a 3.5" litho but the cardboard backing and pin is gone although the 1/8" deep rim edge remains in place and a substitute backing and pin could be easily fashioned. On his tinted portrait, there are 3 small white marks on the right, 1/8" or smaller. The metal surface has a couple of very slightly raised hairlines and in reflected light there are some additional very fine lines caused by the microscopic surface of the metal over which the original paint is applied. Overall appearance remains quite clean and in addition to being a rare large size from this era, the fact that it is a litho makes it even more unusual. The Hake 2004 revised value is $350 for a complete example. Also see large 4" cello buttons for McKinley/TR #225 and Taft #264.
