Item Description
First is 3.25x5.5" postcard with Jan. 12 '48 postmark and printed return address for "Bob Smith" at "30 Rockefeller Plaza" plus typed address to a radio listener of his in Hollis, NY. Card includes his photo with facsimile signature but at the end of the personal message is an actual ink signature, just lightly faded. Message to the listener with Jan. 12, 1948 date reads "Dear Mrs. Matheson: Many Thanks For Your Really Swell Letter - I'll Be Playing Your Request For 'I Understand' On Monday, January 26th Between 7:45 and 8:00 - Hope You'll Be Listening!" Card has light crease at lower left corner and a light 2.25" ripple slightly crossing where he signed. There is also a light full vertical crease to the right of center but card remains quite clean and overall in Fine condition. Card was sent just after the historic premiere of "Puppet Playhouse" December 27, 1947 on which Howdy Doody was mentioned but not seen. The second installment of that show aired January 3, 1948 but still with no Howdy appearing. Smith was still doing his morning radio show which he had begun in August of 1946. A most interesting piece issued just before the Howdy Doody Show made television history. The second item is 2x3.5" "Howdy Doody Talkin' Tag" premium. This has image of Howdy with open area at the mouth and a movable cardboard disk to make 4 different faces by changing the mouth expression. Reverse has text for Wonder Bread and Hostess cupcakes. Several dots of missing surface paper and several spots of thin glue where the piece was once mounted but text is still readable although somewhat incomplete. Front of the piece is clean and Fine. Also included are 4 pieces of Howdy Doody "Play Money." These were premiums as indicated on the reverse from "Ogilvie Flour Mills Co." and could be collected to purchase a "BSA Bike." Reverse is in both English and French and has 1954 expiration date. Flub-A-Dub is on the $1,000 bill, Mr. Bluster on the $5,000 bill, Princess Summerfall Winterspring on the $10,000 bill and Dilly Dally on the $25,000 bill. Very small age traces on the bills which are each 2.5x5.5".
