Auction #197 - Part II
Item numbers 992 through 2667 in auction 197
Item Description
2-5/8" tall with brass bar at top inscribed with the title "Work And Win." This was a 'Dime Novel' from New York publisher Frank Tousey, by then a long-time publisher of low-cost pulp fiction stories for mass consumption. The more well-known firm of Street & Smith apparently provided his most meaningful competition. The full title of this publication was "Work & Win: An Interesting Weekly For Young America." We've found a beginning date of December 9, 1898 and apparently the publication lasted until 1925. The item offered here is most likely c. 1899. It features, with portrait and name, the hero of the stories "Fred Fearnot," a bright youth who travels the world doing good deeds. The reverse of this piece pictures his female associate "Evelyn." Each side of the 1.25" medallion has tarnish loss but about 50% remaining on each side. Reverse side has tiny text from maker "W. & H. Co. Newark, N.J." The stories were written by H.K. Shackleford who used the pen name Hal Standish. It's possible this badge, almost certainly offered through the publication as a premium to its readers, may pre-date the badge offered in 1900 by Tip Top Magazine, for their character Frank Merriwell (see item #1161). Since this "Fred Fearnot" badge is undated, it's impossible to know an exact issue year although perhaps a search of the early issues of the publication itself would yield an offering to the readers. See following related item. Only example we know of.
