Item Description
See previous item #1159 for the historic bkg. to this item. This piece is the same size and format as the preceding and the medallion has same image of "Fred Fearnot" with same Dime Novel title on the bar pin "Work And Win," however, the reverse of the medallion pictures and names "Admiral George Dewey." The same maker's mark is on this piece as well, although this time rather than along the lower rim, it is just under the bust of Dewey reading "W.& H. Co. Newark, N.J." The presence of Dewey on this piece confirms an issue date very shortly after the introduction of "Work And Win" on December 9, 1998 as Dewey was immensely popular following the successful conclusion for the United States of the Spanish-American War. We don't know whether this or the previous item was issued first or perhaps simultaneously, but again this piece is a candidate for preceding the Frank Merriwell (see next item) badge first advertised in January of 1900. The luster on this piece is close to the day it was made and essentially Mint. Only example we know of.
