Item Description
11x17" stiff paper promo from the late 1940s issued to promote the "Prince Valiant" newspaper comic strip. The front of the piece features castle front w/separate die-cut drawbridge that has large simulated banner attached to it reading "The Royal Road To Adventure Leads To..." Standing in front of this are a pair of knights, across the moat are another pair of knights on horseback. This "drawbridge" folds open to reveal a 7" tall die-cut pop-out figure of Prince Valiant in battle stance, behind him is battle scene of knights. On the back of the drawbridge is an additional simulated banner w/text promoting Hal Foster's character and newspaper strip. Text includes "Once A Week Millions Of Newspaper Readers Leave Behind Them The Complexities Of The 20th Century And Eagerly Escape To The Refreshing Simplicity And High Adventure Of The Days When Knighthood Was In Flower - Prince Valiant Has Been Heralded For Over A Decade As An Outstanding Leader With Readers - Foster Tells The Stories Through Beautiful Painstaking Drawings And In A Prose Style Which Has A Grace And Elegance Unlike Any Other Strip - Perhaps Your Territory Is Still Open-Write Us Now For The Terms On Hal Foster's Exceptional Adventure Page Prince Valiant." Art on the back of the piece depicts different castle view w/yet another banner that includes name of general sales manager and King Features Syndicate address. At the bottom of this is a die-cut slot which obviously once held some type of form and/or envelope to be returned to KFS. Lt. margin wear, mostly at corners w/very faint 3" crease at lower right. VF. Very nicely designed promo, the only example we've seen.
